The hair loss industry is a multi-million dollar industry made up of cosmetic products, wigs, tonics, medications and expensive surgical procedures. There are also countless websites and forums, and with the abundance available information, it can all be very confusing for those who are beginning their research.
It is important to research all available options and decide which one is best for you. We will now break down the most common treatments available today:
Table of Contents
1. Medicated Solutions
You may have already heard of Regaine®, an over-the-counter minoxidil topical solution used to stimulate hair growth. This is a very popular product and can be effective for early stages of baldness. However, its results are limited and there are instances of contact dermatitis due to one of the solvents used.
Finasteride, or its more commonly known trade name Propecia®, is another medication FDA-approved for male pattern hair baldness. It works by inhibiting type II 5α-reductase, the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (the potent hormone that causes thinning of the hair).
These medications can be effective. However, with all medications, there are side effects and contraindications that must be considered and discussed with your doctor.
2. Wearing a Wig
Believe it or not, wigs have come a long way and you won’t end up looking like a doll when you put one on. You can purchase human hair wigs to match your original colour, however, they can also be pretty expensive depending on the make. Some wigs can be “glued” to the scalp to give a very natural look. Bear in mind that these wigs will need to be professionally re-applied every month or two as your real hairs underneath will need trimming. Furthermore your real hairs will not be able to “breathe” and its regrowth potential may be hindered.
3. Hair Loss Concealer Powders
These powders work by bonding to existing hair shafts to give the appearance of thicker hair. Alike wigs, they can immediately hide the appearance of bald spots or thinning hair. They can be applied in the comfort of your own home, and come in a variety of different colours to suit your natural hair colour. The downside is that it will need to be applied everyday. And although some claim to be weather proof, some say the powder comes off with rain or sweat, and hence look unnatural.
4. Hair Transplants
The two common hair transplant methods today are Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Both methods essentially involve taking hair follicles from a donor area in the back or sides of the scalp, and transplanting it in the balding areas of the scalp. Unlike a wig, the transplanted hairs are your own hair and can naturally grow over time. However, as a surgical procedure, there is risk of scarring that can be visible and even damage surrounding hair follicles. Furthermore, hair transplants do not prevent further thinning of the other susceptible areas and repeat procedures will be needed. Hair transplants are known to be very costly, usually costing thousands of dollars depending on how many grafts are needed.
5. PRP Therapy
This revolutionary hair treatment utilises your own blood to your advantage. Your blood is spun in a centrifuge separating the plasma component from the red and white blood cells. This plasma contains many growth factors that have been shown to promote hair growth when injected into the scalp. With promising cases out there, PRP is gaining popularity. As it utilises your own blood, it is seen as natural and carries little risk. There will be some discomfort, as the plasma will need to be injected into a few areas of the scalp.
6. Low-level Laser Hair Therapy
It might sound like science fiction, but it was found that laser light with a wavelength of 650 nanometres can stimulate hair growth. Although there are some positive studies, the results are limited if not used in conjunction with other treatments.
