High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

WHAT IS HIFU?

HIFU stands for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound. Bioscor’s Doublo Gold is a clinicial HIFU which uses a ultrasound lifting system to treat lax areas of the face and body to without causing any superficial damage or downtime.  Our clinical HIFU System is a non-invasive and non-surgical device that offers safe, effective and long-term treatment results.

HIFU intensifies and focuses sound waves to deliver high energy deep into the skin to create thermal coagulation points at the SMAS layer, which is the superficial musculoaponeurotic system, or in the deep dermis and subcutaneous adipose tissue to achieve two things:

  1. stimulates the creation of new collagen at a continuous rate for 90 – 180 days; and
  2. tightening of the sagging muscle tissue and deep structural support layers of the skin in areas typically addressed by plastic surgeons

As we age, the collagen levels in our skin which naturally declines and loses its ability to hold firm against gravity that pulls the skin down. HIFU helps address this problem by stimulating the creation of new collagen AND target the deepest support layers in the SMAS which are the layers usually addressed in plastic and cosmetic surgery without the need to cut or disturb the surface of the skin.

Unlike lasers and radio frequency, which penetrate the skin from the outside-in, the HIFU Therapy bypasses the surface of the skin, delivering focused ultrasound energy at depths of up to 4.5mm in the facial areas – the same planes targeted by a modern surgical facelift.

HOW DOES HIFU WORK?

Without damaging the skin’s surface, the Doublo Gold Clinical HIFU System delivers intense ultrasound energy to the muscle fascia in order to tighten the sagging muscle tissue. It is a target area that will give instant lifting.

Bioscor also provides HIFU for the body, as this various areas on the body can also be treated as the transducer focuses on thermal coagulation points to destroy fat cells and helps slim, trim and tighten the desired fatty or lax areas.

ABILITY TO TARGET THE SKIN AT THREE DEPTHS FOR FACE LIFTING

Shallow Areas of the Face

The Clinical HIFU technology induces wrinkle improvement by creating superficial dermal neocollagenesis in collagen-rich dermis layer at 1.5mm depth for shallow areas of the face like forehead and around the eyes.

Lax Jawline & Double Chin

The mid to deep dermis at 3.0mm depth from skin surface is part of the SMAS layer which has fibrous septa.  The Clinical HIFU technology is able to promote collagen regeneration and facial lifting by producing TCPs in the deeper dermis to produce new collagen at a continuous rate for 90-180 days.

Lax Neck, Folds & Muscle Tissue

The SMAS layer is an area of musculature of the face that exists at 4.5mm depth from the skin’s surface.  The SMAS layer is composed of collagen and elastin fibres and plays the role of delivering muscle contractions to the skin’s surface.  The Clinical HIFU technology enables non-surgical face lifting and tightening also in the deeper SMAS layers and lasts longer then the results obtained from RF treatments.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DOES THE HIFU TREATMENT FEEL?

During the treatment, you may feel a pricking sensation when the HIFU is emitting energy.  When the deeper levels of skin are being treated, some “hot spots” may be felt but will immediately dissipate after the treatment.

HOW LONG DOES THE HIFU TREATMENT TAKE?

Treatment typically takes from 30-60 minutes depending on the areas targeted and can therefore be done even during your lunch break.

After the procedure, you may experience a slight bit of swelling or redness around the treatment site, but it should not be enough to keep you from returning to your regular activities immediately following your procedure.

The standard full face treatment can take 60 minutes but any additional area(s) such as neck will add another 20 minutes.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OR ANY DOWNTIME WITH HIFU?

With HIFU, there is no downtime. You may experience slight swelling and redness with a minor heat flush similar to “sunburnt” sensation but they are of a temporary nature and generally disappears after 2 – 3 days.

You are able to return to your normal activities right away, and there are no special measures you need to take, unless advised otherwise by your clinician.

HOW LONG DOES THE RESULTS OF HIFU LAST?

Depending on age and lifestyle factors, the results should last 12 months, however, skin continues to age and collagen production will naturally decline so it is advised that patients have a treatment every year to maintain their results.

WILL I NEED MORE THAN ONE SESSION OF HIFU?

As the HIFU creates instant heat coagulation points in the deep tissue layers, you will feel some of the effects immediately. Most patients only need one treatment; however, some may benefit from more than one treatment so we advise you to come in for a review three months after your initial treatment. We can then assess skin laxity and how your body has responded to the treatment. If optimum collagen-building hasn’t been achieved with the one treatment, another session will benefit you.

However, in the case of body treatments, it takes time to destroy fat cells; so it does take 2-3 months before you start to see the treatment effects.

WHERE DO I START?

You can either come into our clinic or organize an online video consultation with us to have an in-depth discussion on whether HIFU is the treatment for you.
